The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination that primarily assess the technical knowledge of students in various undergraduate subjects of engineering. GATE is conducted collectively by the Indian Institute of Science and Seven Indian Institutes of Technologies at Roorkee, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati, Chennai and Mumbai on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of upper Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.
GATE comprises of 65 questions having maximum of 100 marks. Out of 65 questions, 10 questions are from General Ability (Verbal and Numerical ability) and 55 questions are Technical, based on the Paper chosen. The General Ability section will have 5 One-mark questions and 5 Two-mark questions. The Technical section and Engineering Mathematics section is having 55 questions in which 25 are One-mark questions and 30 are Two-mark questions. Generally, 1/3rd of original marks will be deducted for every wrong MCQ answers, while there is no negative marks for numerical ability type questions. Today’s the examination for all the papers is carried out in an online Computer Based Test mode where the candidates are shown the questions in a random sequence on a computer screen, At the end of the 3-hour, the computer automatically closes the screen from further actions. GATE results are usually declared one month after the examinations are over. The results show full marks scored by a candidate, the GATE score, the all-India rank (AIR) and the cut off marks for various categories in the candidate’s paper over. Validity of GATE score is for 3 years from the date of announcement of the results.
The GATE score of a candidate measure the relative performance level of a candidate. The score is used for taking admissions in various post-graduate & doctorate programs (e.g. ME, M.Tech, P.hd) in Indian higher education institutes, with scholarship provided by MHRD and other government agencies. To avail the scholarship, the candidate must first secure admitted in these Institutes, by a procedure that could vary from institute to institute. GATE-qualified candidates get scholarship of 12,400 per month for master’s degree.They are also eligible for the award of JRF in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored projects. Top ranker in GATE are entitled to apply for “Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Fellowship” awarded by CSIR. Some government organizations prescribe the post of a Scientist/Engineer for GATE qualified candidates.
In Today’s era, various academicians have acknowledged GATE as being one of the toughest exams in its category. Some non-Indian universities like the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and some technical universities in Germany also acknowledge GATE score as a reference for judging the quality of the students for admission into their Masters and Ph.D. programs.
Currently, GATE scores are also being used by several Indian public sector undertakings for recruiting graduate engineer. Many companies have signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the GATE organizing committee, for using GATE score as a conceal tool for recruiting engineers, some companies are oil and natural gas corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd., Coal India Ltd., Ircon International Ltd., Airport Authority of India, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, National Thermal power corporation Ltd. etc
