“What matter is not what we teach, it’s how they learn”

According to Spady [1], Outcome-based education (OBE) means clearly focusing and organizing an educational system around what is essential for all students to be able to do successfully at the end of their learning experiences. Starting with a clear picture of what is important for students to be able to do, then organizing the curriculum, instruction, and assessment to make sure this learning ultimately happens.

Outcome-based education is an educational theory that bases each part of an education system around outcomes. The emphasis in OBE system is on measuring “Outcome rather than Input”. Each educational agency is responsible for setting its own outcomes [2]. An education agency which follows the principal of outcome-based learning addressed the following question in a proper manner.

1. Are my students learning?
2. What are they learning?
3. How well are they learning?
4. What affects their learning?
5. How much have they learned?

In all the above questions, you can see that every question target to learning. Outcome-based education is the only learning philosophy which targets only to learning of students. Everything is centered around the learning rather than teaching. In OBE learning are defined in the form of Outcome therefor it is known as outcome-based education. Since everything is the outcome, there are certain criteria an outcome must follow. Good learning outcomes must be

• Achievable
• Observable
• Measurable
• Challenging

OBE Approach

A teacher in outcome-based education follows the different approach as shown in Figure-1. A teacher first fixes the outcome they expected from a class by teaching a particular course. Once the outcome decided and fix then it became easy to design/decide the strategies and methodologies to achieve that outcomes.

Whatever the strategies and methodologies are decided, a teacher must design and formulate the assessment tools [3] in order to validate the achievement of learning outcomes. If a teacher designed the strategies to provide the knowledge up to the application level then assessment must be designed to check the knowledge up to the application level.

Benefits of Outcome-Based Education:

1. Clarity: Students have a clear understanding of what is expected on them at the end of the course
2. Flexibility: Using various teaching methods and assessment system.
3. Involvement: Students are expected to do their own learning to gain a full understanding of the material
4. Comparison: Compare easily across the institution allow students to move between institutions with relative ease.
